Midpoints

The 45 midpoints in your chart

A midpoint is the degree exactly halfway between two planets. Nothing sits there, which is the point: the tradition reads it as a sensitive spot that means something when a third body, a transit or an angle arrives on it. Ten planets make forty-five of them.

Required.

Optional here. Without it the Moon midpoints may be a degree or two out.

Town or city, and the country.

How a midpoint differs from an aspect

An aspect is a relationship two planets are already in. A midpoint is a degree neither of them occupies, and on its own it does nothing at all. It becomes a statement when something arrives: a third planet in the natal chart, a transit crossing it, or one of the chart angles falling on it.

A midpoint is also an axis rather than a point. The degree opposite is treated as the same sensitive place, so a planet on either end counts. Both ends are printed above for that reason.

Why the orb is 1.5 degrees and not five

Because forty-five sensitive degrees is a lot. At a five degree orb, and counting both ends of each axis, roughly a quarter of the zodiac would be within range of something, and every chart would have hits. A technique that always finds something has not found anything.

So the orb here is tight, and no hits at all is a normal and honest result. Plenty of charts have none.

Where the readings come from

The midpoint tradition, and Reinhold Ebertin's Combination of Stellar Influences above all, reads a midpoint as the two principles combined. That is the same subject a conjunction covers, so the text shown for each hit is the pair reading this site already uses for the conjunction, rather than a second set of forty-five paragraphs written to say the same thing in different words.

What that does not mean is that a midpoint and a conjunction are the same event. The subject is shared; the condition is not. A conjunction is two planets in the same place, and a midpoint is a degree that only matters once something else turns up on it.

The aspects, where those readings live →

This is an advanced technique

Midpoints are worth very little without the chart they came from. If you have not read the planets, houses and aspects first, that is the order the tradition puts them in and there is a reason for it.
