Your profected year
One whole sign per year of life, counted from your Ascendant. The house it lands on is the subject of the year, and the ruler of the sign sitting on it becomes the time lord. It is the simplest predictive technique in the tradition and the easiest to check against a life you have already lived.
How it works
Take your age in completed years, divide by twelve and keep the remainder. That many signs on from your Ascendant is the profected house, and the traditional ruler of the sign sitting on it is the time lord for the year. Nothing else happens: no ephemeris call, no transits, and no interpretation until you bring one.
What the tradition then does is read the year through that planet. Where it sits natally, which houses it rules and what is transiting it are all treated as describing the year. A year whose lord is left alone is read as a quiet one.
Why the time lord is never Uranus, Neptune or Pluto
Profection is a Hellenistic technique, and the time lord is the domicile ruler in the system the technique was written for, which has seven planets. Assigning Aquarius to Uranus here would put a nineteenth century rulership inside a second century method. So Scorpio gives Mars, Aquarius gives Saturn and Pisces gives Jupiter, and this page says so rather than quietly using whichever list was to hand.
Check it against a year you remember
This is the rare technique you can test backwards. The table runs forward, but the same house returns every twelve years, so the year you are in now is the one you had at twelve, at twenty-four and at thirty-six. Whether those years had anything in common is a question you can answer and nobody else can.
